The story of Benaiah Hayes Trapani’s Arrival

Friday, June 25th we were 36 weeks and 6 days and my blood pressure was continuing to get worse. Already 150/100, so we met the backup Dr. for our midwife. He said everything was looking ok and we should continue to try for a home birth. However, we should also do several tests to be sure it was not preeclampsia. We really liked the Dr. and were excited that he was interested in helping us to have the home birth we desired.

The tests were completed and results were in Tuesday evening. Things did not look good. It was confirmed that it was a very mild case of preeclampsia. The Dr. said that we should think about doing whatever possible to encourage labor using the midwife’s techniques. After much prayer and discussion between the midwife, Dr., Chris, and myself, we decided it would be best to go to the hospital to induce. The main concern was if there were any complications there would be a 40-45 min drive and we no longer had a peace about having a home birth. The Dr. thought we should come in that night but we decided for the morning so I could get a good night’s sleep and we could get everything together that we would need.

We all met at Christus Santa Rosa Downtown at 8 Wednesday morning. I got checked in, settled in the room. We talked about our options, deciding to go ahead and have an epidural (I had seriously considered not) and Pitocin, and break the water later once things were started. I was actually already having contractions and was at 5cm. Then there was a mix up with the labs that delayed things more. So we didn’t get the epidural till 2:45 and pitocin later. (I had already been on mag. for a while to keep me from strokes or seizures)

The dr. came in a broke my water sometime after 5 and right away said, “something’s not right” he realized that the baby was not coming down then the cord prolapsed. A prolapsed cord could cause brain damage or even death. Within 2 minutes I was on the operating table for an emergency C-Section.

I was amazed at God’s leading! I was at peace the whole time. Though I did shake uncontrollably (later I was told that was because of the meds I was on), I knew that this was for the best. It was also amazing how He had us not stay at home and to get an epidural. We were at the hospital instead of having a 45 min emergency transport and I was able to be awake for the birth.

I couldn’t watch and couldn’t move anything below my waist, but I could feel them pushing my tummy.  That was weird. Then the most amazing thing was the moment the Dr. said, “he’s here!” and I heard him whimper.  I was flooded with Joy and amazement. I wanted so bad to hold him but my arms were tied down and I was shaking so much. Chris went with him to the nursery.

Benaiah Hayes Trapani was born at 5:15pm (about 10 min after my water was broken) on June 30, 2010 (my granddad’s birthday) weighing 8 pounds and 10 ounces and 20 ½ inches long!

Everything went well with the surgery and Benaiah was doing fine. I was in recovery for longer than normal because of having no available nurses to move me back to my room. I got back just before 10pm and Benaiah was released to come to our room at 10:30. I was so happy to finally hold him! He’s so cute!

Christopher and my family had been able to see him in the nursery before they left. Christopher leaned up to the window like he was going to hug him. Chris got to be there for all the things they do with the babies. I got some rest.

We were released the next night much to the surprise of most the caregivers. But, my Dr. said it was fine. There is hardly a scar from surgery the Dr. did an amazing job. I’m very rested and enjoying my little family. We stayed with my family for 2 weeks till I could take care of the boys on my own.
